Once you've finished teaching phonics and your child is well on the way with reading you will notice at around age 7-8 your child will start to devour books. This is when he will begin learning how to teach himself as he now holds the key to knowledge - reading. If your child of this age is your eldest you may now have a younger one who is ready to learn to read and so your time and attention is being stretched. Reading aloud is one way you can combine your time spent with each child, so continue to do that - at least it makes you sit down for a while!
This is a great time to start Science in the Beginning by Dr Jay Wile. History can be covered with Language Lessons from Australian History Book 1, which will also give you beginning grammar, poetry, narration and copywork exercises as well as read aloud material all while also studying Australian history. Artist studies are also included which gives you art appreciation. Though it contains 160 lessons, enough for a year's work, some of our customers use it over 2 years, which is worth considering as you plan ahead.
Some children are ready to transition to cursive writing at this age, but it will be entirely up to you to decide when that should be and why. It's a good idea to have your child printing neatly for a while before you teach cursive, but you will notice that they will pick up speed as they become more competent. If your child's writing starts getting messy, then changing to cursive will slow them down to produce more legible writing. The Art of Cursive is a lovely program which teaches cursive along with picture study (and therefore art appreciation) and if you want more writing practice this may also be done using Grammar Through Copywork.
