Grade 4

By this stage some children are coming to the end of their formal spelling program and are just needing reinforcement and practice. It's a good idea to continue this practice for a few more years, possibly up to about age 13. Our ebook Phontastic Spelling Tactics was written for just this time of learning and provides spelling rules and copywork passages from excellent literature to reinforce those rules. It comes in both British and US editions.

Once your child is ready for cursive writing you can start using The Art of Cursive.  These books use the Charlotte Mason element of Picture Study together with cursive practice. Fine works of art are studied and sentences about the picture are copied. All pictures are labelled with the title of the painting and artist, so you get some art appreciation and history in as well.

Science in the Beginning is mentioned in all our guides for primary aged children because it teaches at three different skill levels in one book and is the best value science curriculum around.

As you well know, character training is a daily effort and learning from the Bible and example are the biggest tools. Training our children to study the Bible, and not just read it, is a great life long habit. The best tool we've used is Training Hearts, Teaching Minds by Starr Meade.

Grade 4 Option 1

English and History

Language Lessons from Australian History Book 2 is aimed at 9-11 year olds teaching English and Australian History simultaneously. There is also Language Lessons from Antiquity Level 2 which is a study of Ancient History chronologically with Biblical history. A basic knowledge of grammar is required, however an older child will cope fine with the grammar instruction as it is mainly reinforcement with more expectation and heavier workload than Book 1, with a few more advanced grammar concepts included, e.g. use of semi colons. The child is also required to read more advanced books. Teacher's Notes, Answers and Comprehensive book list are all included.

Language Lessons from Antiquity is a great choice for this age as it will provide many opportunities to read wonderful books, both historical fiction and non-fiction with themed English lessons.

Church History can also be covered simply bu reading aloud some of the titles from the Christian Biographies for Young Readers series.

Spelling

Phontastic Spelling Tactics has been one of our consistently best sellers.

Grammar

This age is the right time to get into full swing with teaching grammar. Our ebook Grammar Through Copywork is a Charlotte Mason inspired curriculum using classic literature to teach grammar concepts. With this method, there is also the opportunity to improve spelling and written expression by providing excellent models, so it's always a win-win.
