Language Lessons from Antiquity, Part 1, Level 2 is a Charlotte Mason inspired curriculum that teaches English and Ancient History simultaneously using living books as its base. Level 2 is aimed at children aged 9-11
Part 1 covers the ancient history of Mesopotamia, Israel, Egypt and China from Creation to Kingdom (King Saul).
Two read aloud books are required to complete this course: The Bible (preferably KJV) and The Story of the Ancient World This latter book is available as an ebook from Nothing New Press (at this stage we are not stocking the hardcopy version). The Bible is taken as authoritative and is the main history text, with other read alouds used to expand on that history.
Other read aloud books are used and a detailed book list is included in the Teacher’s Manual. It is recommended that you have as many of these as possible to enrich your child’s learning of ancient history.
In Level 2 basic grammar is taught assuming some previous introductory knowledge. This course will build and reinforce the child’s knowledge and prepare them for more advanced grammar. This course will still benefit a child that has not had any previous grammar instruction however you may need to slow down in some instances.
Grammar concepts covered are:
Nouns: Proper, Common, Possessive
Pronouns: Singular, Plural
Adjectives: Articles; Use with nouns
Verbs: Action and Being; Helping
Conjunctions: and, but, or
Prepositions: introduce prepositional phrases
The Sentence: Subject and Predicate: Identify and Use
Apostrophe, Commas, Punctuation
Your child will also learn to write an informative essay using the five paragraph format, being assigned this task twice in the course. Other types of writing skills taught are chapter summaries and story writing.
Opportunities are given to learn listening skills, reading comprehension, narration, copywork and imaginative composition. There are also many opportunities for discussion most often with the purpose of looking at issues and circumstances you come across in your reading of the Bible and related history.
Vocabulary exercises are also included and we recommend Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary of the American Language
The history is learned by reading aloud to your children from the Bible (and other books) and is extended and reinforced in the Language Lessons. Each lesson will note what you are to begin reading, and most lessons require you to do the Bible reading or The Story of the Ancient World reading before doing the lesson.
