Why choose Singapore maths?
Deciding on a maths program for homeschool or school is a big task. From my own experience, finding one that suits your child’s learning style, is easy for both child and parent to use, is reasonably priced, and most of all, that gives you good results, takes some research. If you’re on the hunt for a maths program, we’ve nutted out the benefits of Singapore maths give some good reasons why you would choose Singapore maths.
Easy to use
- Design. While most Singapore maths programs are colourful and very appealing to children, the design and layout are more important. You will want a layout that is not crowded and distracting, but not too sparse with content either. We think New Syllabus Primary Maths strikes the right balance.
- Teacher manuals. It’s only in recent years that Singapore maths programs have included teacher manuals to assist teachers and parents in using the textbooks and workbooks. They are a great boon to homeschooling parents in particular and will save you a lot of time. In these, you’ll find the answers as well as teaching notes and information on which manipulatives to use and how.
- Open and go. The Singapore maths programs that we offer are well organised and require little to no preparation to teach.
Maths and science programs are where most homeschool parents will spend their money. Singapore maths programs are traditionally very reasonably priced which make them a good fit for most family budgets.
Singapore maths gives good results
Singapore has produced the world’s top maths students (along with China) consistently over decades. Singapore maths is not for everyone, and there is no guarantee that it will work for your situation, but it does do a fantastic job for many students the world over. It is well respected and not only used in Singapore schools, but in both private and public schools in many Asian countries, the UK and now also Australia, as well as by homeschool parents throughout the world.
Australian schools are now seeing the advantages of using Singapore maths, with more and more schools including it in both mainstream curriculum and individual needs learning environments.
Singapore maths is a developmentally designed curriculum for teaching maths concepts and problem solving. Unlike many curriculums that only use pictorial and abstract problems, Singapore maths uses a spiral approach and always begins with concrete models that children manipulate to discover what the numerals and the functions of maths represent. It then moves to the pictorial by creating a visual representation on paper, and finally to the abstract where the problems are solved.

You don’t have to worry about the Australian Curriculum
Since the introduction of the Australian Curriculum, many homeschool parents express their desire to keep up with the AC. Let’s be straight – the Australian Curriculum is the bottom line as far as educational standards go. Don’t be fooled by “keeping up with the AC” – it’s not a standard to attain to, but rather a standard to leap from. Singapore maths helps you do that.
Singapore has consistently outperformed Australia in maths proficiency year in, year out, coming in at the top or second in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
